Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin – Raphael Matos, (#6 ProWorks/Sierra Sierra Enterprises) steered clear of the various race incidents and finished the Gehl Champ Car Atlantic Championship Finale at Road America in second place. The finale was a series of starts and stops with ten drivers leaving the race due to contact or mechanical failure.
Fortunately, Matos was able to exit the standing start unscathed and keep the lead for the first three laps before being overtaken by James Hinchcliffe (#3 Emexis/INDECK). Matos went on to retake the lead from Hinchcliffe in a powerful pass after a restart.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Bomarito (#23 Miracle Sealants/Dynacor) was making progress up the pack, passing Andreas Wirth (#37 INDECK/Wirth Solar) to take second. Matos lost the battle to Bomarito on lap 12 and was unable to retake the lead despite a strong comeback. Matos established a new track record (1:59.174) for fastest lap on the last lap of the race.
Matos claimed his fourth podium victory, placing second in the race and closed out his rookie season in fourth overall and third in the Rookie of the Year race.
As the season draws to a close, the Sierra Sierra Enterprises team has begun their planning for the 2007 season. The team will be expanding to a two-car team with Matos returning to one of those seats.
