Denver, Colorado – Coming off a winning weekend in San Jose, Raphael Matos (#6 ProWorks/Sierra Sierra) claimed another podium finish in The Grand Prix of Denver Atlantic race on Sunday. Matos took second after pulling forward from a fourth place start in Round 10 of the Yokohama Presents the Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda Series.
Starting in 4th position, Matos knew he had to execute the standing start perfectly and make quick progress. True to form, he immediately launched to 3rd after the green flag and began pressuring series leader Simon Pagenaud (#15 Team Australia) for 2nd. In a successful mid-race pass, Matos claimed 2nd from Pagenaud and worked to tighten the gap of race leader, Graham Rahal (#18 Gehl Company).
“By the end of the weekend we really improved a lot and only left a small gap between 1st and 2nd. Raphael drove with his head and he ran hard,” commented Dave Empringham, Driver Development Coach for Sierra Sierra Enterprises.
Matos moves up to 4th place in the competitive championship point’s race. The Sierra Sierra Team moves on to Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on August 27th for the Grand Prix of Montreal. In 2005, Matos won the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve race as well as the championship for the Star Mazda series.
